- Observation ID
- 52653
- Indicator
- Asylum applications, total
- What is counted
- Persons who lodged an application for international protection with the Cypriot determining authority in the reference calendar year, all applicant types combined (first-time and subsequent). The undelying statistical unit is an application EVENT, not a person: one person may lodge more than one application in a year. Table migr_asyappctza, applicant=TOTAL.
- Statistical concept
- Flow of asylum applications lodged during the calendar year (Regulation (EC) No 862/2007)
- Geography
- Cyprus (country)
- Period
- 2025 (2025-01-01 to 2025-12-31)
- Age band
- Total (TOTAL)
Age at application, as published by Eurostat in migr_asyappctza: TOTAL, two disjoint under-18 bands (Y_LT14, Y14-17), one OVERLAPPING super-band (Y_LT18 = their sum), two further disjoint adult bands (Y18-34, Y35-64), one open band (Y_GE65), and UNK. A DIFFERENT codelist from migr_pop1ctz's 5-year bands and from every CYSTAT age scheme -- always scope by scheme_id. - Nationality
- Total (TOTAL)
Citizenship of Cyprus asylum applicants, as published by Eurostat in migr_asyappctza. 206 declared codes, 79 ever non-zero for Cyprus (75 individual countries plus TOTAL, EXT_EU27_2020, STLS and UNK) -- verified live 2026-08-28, correcting docs/ROADMAP.md which previously said 77. This codelist has NO historical entities (no USSR, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, Serbia-and-Montenegro): RS (Serbia), ME (Montenegro), XK (Kosovo*) and PS (Palestine*) are current entries instead. A DIFFERENT codelist from eurostat-citizen-aggregate (migr_pop1ctz, aggregate-only, includes historical membership-vintage groups like EU27_2007 that do not exist here) and from every CYSTAT citizenship scheme -- always scope queries by this scheme_id (see the HO-141 lesson in docs/ROADMAP.md: code "3" means Greece in one role=nationality scheme and non-EU citizens in another). - Sex
- Total (T)
T/M/F/UNK as published by Eurostat in migr_asyappctza. Verified live 2026-08-28: T = M + F + UNK holds exactly for Cyprus 2024 (9,185 = 6,850 + 2,285 + 50). A separate scheme from eurostat-demo-pjan-sex and from every CYSTAT sex scheme (different publisher table, different codes carried) -- always scope by scheme_id. - Value

Methodological caveats
Counts application events, not people and not a stock: one person may lodge more than one application in a year, and the 9,185 applications in 2024 are a different measure from the 27,435 cases pending at the end of 2024. Applications are not decisions or recognitions, and are not temporary protection, which has a different legal basis (Cyprus's whole 2008-2025 Ukrainian applicant count here is 485, against a temporary-protection stock above 25,000). Every value is rounded to the nearest 5, so no published identity holds exactly and no figure should be derived from another by addition or subtraction. The origin is the Cyprus Asylum Service's own case-management system, transmitted to Eurostat under Regulation (EC) No 862/2007, the same origin as any Cypriot national figure and as the population UNHCR counts as resident in Cyprus; two of these are never presented as independent corroboration of each other. Cyprus totals: 2023 11,910; 2024 9,185 (first-time 6,750); 2025 4,610.
