Methodological caveats
COUNTRY OF BIRTH, NOT CITIZENSHIP. A person born abroad who holds the reporting country's citizenship is foreign-born here and a citizen in migr_pop1ctz; a person born in the country to foreign parents is the reverse. The two concepts are never interchanged or subtracted. Stock at 1 January, de jure residents. FOR is the foreign-born total; EU27_2020_FOR and NEU27_2020_FOR split it (Germany 2024: 6,347,951 + 10,533,372 = 16,881,323). Not every country reports every year. Eurostat flags a break in this country's time series for this indicator in 1 January 2007, 1 January 2012, 1 January 2014: values on either side of a break were not measured the same way, so the change across it is not a like-for-like movement.
