What can we compare about Cyprus and Italy?

This page brings together the measures that can currently be sourced for both countries. 3 of 11 planned dimensions have evidence behind them today; the rest remain visible with their coverage limits.

A comparison is useful when we can name what was measured and what remains unknown.

Read each dimension on its own

Compare the sourced figures for each dimension. They describe different things, and no overall similarity score is published. Unavailable dimensions show where evidence is missing.

What is measured. Mean of self-reported answers, on a scale from 0 ("you do not trust any other person") to 10 ("most people can be trusted"), among survey respondents aged 16 and over. Collected through the well-being variables of EU-SILC and published by Eurostat as table ilc_pw03.

How to read it. A country average of a subjective self-report. It says nothing about any individual, and it is not a measure of how trustworthy people in a country are — only of what respondents said. Cross-country comparison of 0-10 scale questions is affected by differences in response style, so small gaps between countries should not be read as real differences.

Source: Eurostat (Statistical Office of the European Union), Trust in others by sex, age and educational attainment (EU-SILC). Instrument: EU-SILC well-being variables, generalised trust item. Eurostat does not publish the sample size on this table; see the EU-SILC methodology for the survey design.

The gap between these two figures is 2.6 points on a 0–10 scale. It is deliberately not converted into a similarity percentage: no normalization has been agreed, and one indicator is not a similarity measure.

Migration relationship with Cyprus

People enumerated in Cyprus at the 2021 Census, 1 October 2021. These are two different measures of a connection, not one — a person can appear in either, both, or neither.

Migration relationship between Cyprus and Italy
MeasurePeople in CyprusShare of the population
Holding Italy citizenship9960.11%*
Born in Italy9700.11%*

Citizenship describes a person’s legal nationality. It is not ethnicity, ancestry or birthplace; country of birth is listed separately because the two measures are different.

Humanity Observatory holds no data on people from Cyprus living in Italy; that would come from Italy’s own statistical office or from a bilateral source, neither of which has been ingested.

Geographic proximity

1,958 km

Great-circle distance between capital cities (Nicosia and Rome), WGS84 sphere.

Country profile

No profile statements have been published for Italy. The data model that will carry them is built and enforces the distinction between a fact (needs a source), an observation (needs a real measurement) and an interpretation (needs a named author and a source) — but no statements have been written, and none will be generated.

Coverage

Every dimension the eventual index is specified to use, and whether it has data behind it for this pair.

Coverage of comparison dimensions for Cyprus and Italy
DimensionStatusWhat it would measure
Language proximityunavailableStructural distance between the principal languages of the two countries. No language-distance dataset has been ingested. A candidate exists (ASJP lexical distances) but its reuse terms have not been checked.
Religious composition similarityunavailableDistributional similarity of self-declared religious affiliation.CYSTAT publishes religion for Cyprus (table 1891632E, national level, self-declared) but it has not been ingested, and no comparable measured series has been ingested for any other country. Religious composition is never inferred from nationality.
Social trustavailableAverage self-reported trust in other people, on a 0-10 scale, among people aged 16 and over.
Family valuesunavailableSurvey responses on family obligation and household structure. The candidate sources (EVS, WVS, ESS) all require registration, which would make the ingestion irreproducible from this repository. Not yet resolved.
Institutional trustunavailableTrust in parliament, the police, the judiciary and the civil service.Eurostat ilc_pw03 carries only the interpersonal-trust domain for Cyprus. The institutional domains are in ESS, which requires registration.
Gender attitudesunavailableSurvey responses on gender roles and gender equality. No source ingested.
Work valuesunavailableSurvey responses on the importance of work, hierarchy and autonomy. No source ingested.
Migration and contact historyavailableHow many people in Cyprus hold the other country’s citizenship or were born there.
Geographic proximityavailableGreat-circle distance between the two capitals.
Food and cultural traditionsunavailableDocumented shared dishes, ingredients and culinary lineage. No source ingested. Requires a measurable, sourced definition first.
Historical linksunavailableShared statehood, legal tradition or long-standing institutional ties.Only sourced FACT claims would qualify, and none have been entered for this pair.
